2012年リリースのFrank Oceanによるアルバム”channel ORANGE”より。
かつて栄華を極めた1人の女性が禁断の恋をきっかけに没落していく物語を、古代と現代の異なる時間軸から同じドラマを描くことで巧みに表現しています。

この曲は古代エジプトの女王「クレオパトラ」の生涯がテーマになっています。史実によると、クレオパトラは古代ローマの執政官だったマルクス・アントニウスの愛人になったことで祖国の反感を買い、やがてローマの国内勢力に戦争で敗れ、最期は毒蛇に身を噛ませて自殺しました。Frankはこのクレオパトラの悲劇を曲の前半で語ると共に、後半で同じストーリーを現代にも当てはめています。クレオパトラを1人の黒人女性と見立て、かつて地元で華やかな人生を送っていた彼女がパートナーの黒人男性を裏切り白人男性と浮気したことで過酷な売春をする羽目になってしまった悲哀を人種間の問題とも絡めて表現しているのです。
